Procedure for
ADDING AN ECHO TO THE BACKBONE
through Region 13
INTRODUCTION:
An echo gets added to the backbone when it shows, by its private
distribution, that it has wide appeal. By "backboning" the echo,
a popular echo is made available to all Zone 1 nodes, and the cost
is then shared by everyone concerned.
To assist moderators, sysops, and NECs who wish to have an echo
placed on Fidonet Backbone echomail distribution, the REC, Region
13 has prepared the archive ADDE13A.ZIP (or its successors)
containing:
BACKBONE.HOW - How to get your Elisted echo on the Backbone.
ELUGUIDE.TXT - How to elist your echo, an extract from
ELMOD293.
ELTECREF.TXT - The Technical Reference from ELMOD293.
REGION13.HOW - This file (The procedure within Region 13).
GENERAL STEPS TO TAKE:
Here are the steps to get an new echo on the backbone:
1. Moderator sends netmail to "Echolist" at 1:1/201 as shown
in ELUGUIDE.TXT, to get the echo information on the ELIST.
2. Moderator posts message in ZEC echo addressed to
"Backbone" as shown in BACKBONE.HOW to place the echo into
FIDOSTAT.NA. If the Moderator does not have access to the ZEC
echo, a netmail message containing the necessary information
may be sent to the ZEC with request that the such information
be posted in the ZEC echo.
3. Sysops receiving the echo ask their NECs to request that
the echo be placed on the backbone for distribution.
4. NECs receiving such requests, after checking to ensure
that the echo has been listed in the FIDOSTAT.NA, send a
request to REC13 that the echo be placed on the backbone.
5. REC13, upon receiving 2 or more such NEC requests, posts a
message in the ZEC echo asking that the echo be placed on the
backbone. It is listed in FIDOSTAT.NA until there are 2 or
more requests from the RECs to backbone the echo.
6. The ZEC, upon receiving requests from 2 or more RECs, adds
the echo to FIDONET.NA, placing it onto the backbone for
distribution to all systems who wish to take the echo.
7. Existing private links are changed to fit the local
backbone echomail distribution topology.
It is the moderator's responsibility to follow the appropriate
procedures for Elisting the new echo, to either netmail the ZEC or
obtain the ZEC echo through normal echomail distribution channels,
to request addition of the echo to FIDOSTAT.NA, and to post the
final request for addition to the Backbone after the necessary
recommendations have been received.
If the echo is added ultimately to the Backbone echolist
(FIDONET.NA), the distribution links for the echo become those
already established for echomail distribution. The Moderator is
linked into the echo via normal echomail feeds within his/her Net.
He/she should expect to discontinue the private distribution paths
at this point to prevent the development of dupe-loops in the
Fidonet distribution system.
